Facebook has been going through a major rebrand process. Meet the new Facebook corporate name: Meta.
The change only applies to the whole corporation and not to its individual platforms like Facebook, Instagram or WhatsApp. Meta refers to the parent company that owns those platforms.
The rebranding move comes after a series of negative comments and stories about an ex-employee.
Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook’s CEO, announced the new name and shared his plans to build an online world or “Metaverse” where people can work, communicate and game in a virtual environment using VR headsets.
Zuckerberg said the existing brand needed to change because it couldn’t represent what the company is working on today. According to the Chief Executive, the new company brand reflects who they are and what they hope to build in the future.
“Over time, I hope that we are seen as a metaverse company and I want to anchor our work and our identity on what we’re building towards” he added in a virtual conference.
“We’re now looking at and reporting on our business as two different segments, one for our family of apps, and one for our work on future platforms”.
Meet the new Facebook logo
On Thursday, the company revealed its new logo at its general headquarters in Menlo Park, California. The thumbs-up logo or the “Like” logo was replaced with a blue infinity shape logo.
“Meta” comes from a Greek word that means “beyond”. Mr. Zuckerberg explained that the new name symbolizes that over time users won’t need to use Facebook to use the rest of the company’s services.
Some people think a metaverse may be similar to VR, and some others believe it will become the future of the internet.
Instead of using a computer, people might use a headset in a metaverse to enter the virtual world and connect with all types of digital environments.
It is expected that the virtual world will be used for almost anything from work, social relations with friends and family, concerts and playtime.
