LoL Worlds 2021 has an official location! According to Dot Esports’ report made on August 30, the 2021 League of Legends World Championship will take place in Reykjavík, Iceland, from October 5 till November 6.
The Laugardalshöll Indoor Sporting Arena was chosen to receive the best League of Legends players in this huge annual event. Remember that the Arena is the same place that hosted Riot Games’ VALORANT Masters and Mid-Season Invitational events.
Just as in the previous format last year, the event will be divided into five stages. Riot is expected to confirm the event’s dates this week, but there is a schedule already.
The play-in stage runs from October 5th to 9th, with the group stage happening between 11 and 18 of the same month. Playoffs begin on October 22nd up to October 25th with the quarterfinals. Semifinals will take place on October 30 to 31 and finals on November 6th. Due to the COVID-19 situation, there are no crowds allowed in at any time.
Each part of the 2021 League of Legends World Championship will take place entirely in Iceland because of the COVID-19 pandemic and the fact that many players from different regions are worried about attending and returning home after the event.
After last year’s success, Riot was excited to host the end-of-year event in China for a second time. However, due to unforeseen circumstances, they had no choice but to pivot from Asia and head back home.
On August 24th Riot announced that LoL Worlds 2021, which was initially scheduled in China, would no longer take place in that country due to the increasing concerns about the Delta variant and possible travel restrictions. Instead, the event would be carried out in a European Country.
The Mid-Season Invitational was hosted in Europe this past May. As a result, Europe was a solid choice for the 2021 League of Legends World Championship. Needham said: “After considering all potential options, we concluded that moving Worlds to Europe provided the best opportunity for the most teams, and their best players, to compete”.
The change of location had almost no impact on the number of teams attending the LoL Words 2021 except for one region, the Vietnam Championship Series, that reported problems to attend the event. The growing Coronavirus pandemic has led to increasingly strict visa requirements for Vietnam residents. This means 22 teams out of 24 will be competing in the League of Legends World Championship next October.
